Hello, I’m Christina Bahrdt.

Since my childhood I have always enjoyed making things, getting absorbed in the process of creating and feeling the thrill of seeing the finished product.  I dabbled with a lot of different materials and techniques from textiles to metal work to ceramics over many years.  Eventually my fascination with glass took over and led me to establish STUDIO INDIGO as an Art Glass studio in Atherton, in the Cairns hinterland in Far North Queensland in 1997.  I studied leadlighting (stained glass work) in my native Berlin, before moving to Australia in the early 1980s.  I taught, undertook commissions and exhibited my work in Darwin, Canberra, Cooktown, Port Douglas and the Atherton Tablelands.  My art work is mostly inspired by the beauty of the environment around me – the colours and shapes of the Australian tropics.  Over the years, I have extended the range of techniques to include

  • Lead lighting
  • Tiffany work
  • Glass Mosaic
  • Slumping and fusing
  • Etching
  • Glass bead making (Lamp work)

I take on public and private commissions, some gallery/exhibition work and occasionally facilitate community arts projects.  But my main focus is always on teaching.  I believe many people share my love of coloured glass as well as my need to create things with my hands, but lack the opportunity or confidence to make a start.  I enjoy passing on my skills to students from all over the Tablelands and beyond and watch them leave the studio with a smile on their face and a beautiful piece of artwork in their hand.

Many of my students have participated in exhibitions and worked with me on community arts projects, which are installed in public buildings around the Tablelands.
